Improve Self-Confidence by Refining Ears through Otoplasty

For patients unhappy with the appearance of their ears, Dr. Frank W. Shagets can perform otoplasty to improve the symmetry of their features. This procedure can address ear shape, size, and position. For children in particular, teasing about large or abnormally-shaped ears can be a source of considerable distress. Otoplasty can provide significant results for lasting emotional relief. Dr. Shagets provides cost-effective treatment for both children and adults in Joplin, MO, to help patients feel more at ease in their own body.

What is Otoplasty?

Uneven, excessively large, and protruding ears can make patients both young and old feel self-conscious in their appearance. Otoplasty encompasses the different types of procedures used to address such imperfections, including ear reduction, pinning, and reconstruction. Dr. Shagets particularly focuses on ear reduction and pinning to reshape and reposition the ears. Although this surgery is not always medically necessary, Dr. Shagets understands the impact it can have on a patient's self-esteem and quality of life.

Understanding the Risks and Benefits

Although all surgery carries some risk, otoplasty is considered a relatively routine and safe procedure. You should expect some scarring, but Dr. Shagets takes special care to ensure that any scars are discreetly placed behind the ear or within its creases. In the event that you are unsatisfied with the results, the doctor may be able to refine them with a revision surgery.

Because this procedure is minimally invasive, the recovery period is typically shorter than many facial plastic surgery procedures. In addition to minimal scarring and recovery, otoplasty offers patients immediate and natural-looking results. With a more streamlined appearance, patients can experience less teasing as well as enhanced confidence and quality of life.

Types of Ear Surgeries

Your otoplasty procedure will be designed to achieve your unique goals. Dr. Shagets can use a variety of techniques to address various concerns.

Ear Reduction

Ear reduction surgery can improve the proportions of the ear by reducing the size of the earlobes and surrounding cartilage. As an outpatient procedure, it involves minimal risk and allows you to return to your routine sooner. Ear reduction is commonly paired with an ear pinning procedure.

Ear Pinning

This technique minimizes protrusion of the ears by repositioning the cartilage. During the surgery, Dr. Shagets removes skin to access the cartilage at the back of the ear. This cartilage is then reshaped to position the ear closer to the side of the head. In total, pinning the ears only takes about one to two hours.

Recovery

While the main results of an otoplasty procedure are immediately obvious, you should set aside about a week for recovery. To keep swelling down, you will need to wear a specialized compression garment for the first day, and then replace it with a headband placed over the ears for the next two to three days. Most patients are able to return to school or work within a week of the procedure. While swelling may take up to several months to fade completely, you can enjoy the new, streamlined appearance of your ears.

My results are fantastic. Dr. Shagets is a profectionist, which I love. He is very gentle and thorough. He even came in on a Saturday to check out a concern I had... it was only a stitch! I would highly recommend Dr. Shagets.
