Achieve Fuller Lips with Implants
As we age, our lips can lose volume and shape, prematurely aging us and altering our appearance. Vertical lines can appear after volume loss, accentuating the thinner lip shape. If you have tried “lip-plumping” glosses or balms, or are unhappy with the look of your lips, Facial Aesthetic & Laser Center can provide a permanent enhancement with lip implants or a combination with injectables at our Joplin, MO, practice. Dr. Frank W. Shagets is board-certified in facial and reconstructive surgery, and has been successfully helping patients achieve greater confidence and a better quality of life for over 30 years.
Determining Your Candidacy
Patients looking to improve their overall appearance through lip implants should be in good health, with no existing medical conditions that could slow or prevent healing. During a consultation, Dr. Shagets will review your health history to determine if you are a good candidate.
While dermal fillers offer short-term effects, lip implants are the best options for patients seeking permanent results.
In addition, it is important that patients have reasonable expectations for the procedure and understand the risks involved with any facial cosmetic surgery, such as implant rejection, infection, scarring, or loss of sensation.
Before beginning any procedure, our team will review detailed information with you so that you understand the predicted outcomes and associated risks for the procedure.
The Implant Procedure
For the benefit of our patients, Dr. Shagets offers treatment in-office, which keeps costs down and also provides a more private setting. Dr. Shagets’ extensive training and experience allow us to offer this benefit, and we are the only office-based surgical center for facial and reconstructive surgery in the four-state area. Each patient’s care is unique, but the lip implant procedure generally consists of several steps:
- To begin, Dr. Shagets will administer local anesthetic in the surgical area to completely numb your lips. You should feel minimal discomfort during the procedure. Dr. Shagets can also provide sedation medications to help you feel more at ease during the length of the procedure.
- Dr. Shagets will carefully make small incisions in one corner of the mouth.
- The inner lip area will be shaped and prepared in order to accept the lip implant.
- Dr. Shagets will insert the lip implant, threading it through and trimming the material to ensure the fit and position are correct for the most aesthetic appearance.
- Finally, the incisions are closed with sutures and the procedure is complete.
From start to finish, the lip implant procedure takes about one hour to complete.
Recovery & Aftercare
Recovery after a lip implant treatment is relatively short and most patients find they can return to daily routines within just a couple days of surgery. While inflammation or bruising around the lip area is common, side effects usually only last for a week to ten days. About a week after the procedure, Dr. Shagets will remove the sutures and ensure the surgical site is properly healing. Typically, minimal pain or soreness occurs during the recovery process, and any pain can be managed with over-the-counter medications.
