Eyelid Surgery Can Enhance Aesthetics and Restore Vision

Frank W. Shagets, M.D. can perform precise and natural-looking eyelid surgery at our fully accredited surgical center in Joplin, MO, to reduce the signs of aging, including wrinkles and sagging eyelids. At Facial Aesthetics and Laser Centre, we are equipped and ready to keep you comfortable and safe during your outpatient procedure. This procedure has both cosmetic and functional benefits for the patients. Every year, over 100,000 patients in the U.S. choose to undergo eyelid surgery in order to improve their appearance, vision, or both.

Blepharoplasty can provide a more alert, refreshed appearance and even improve some patients' vision.

Blepharoplasty Basics

An eye lift, otherwise known as a blepharoplasty, is a minor cosmetic surgery that can rejuvenate saggy, puffy, droopy upper and lower eyelids that give individuals a tired-looking appearance. In addition to its aesthetic benefits, the surgery can restore eyelid functionality when excess tissue has impaired vision. During the procedure, Dr. Shagets will use strategically placed incisions to remove skin and fat in order to provide patients with a refreshed appearance. This procedure is often combined with a full face lift, brow lift, or dermal fillers to give patients an even more alert and youthful appearance.

Are You a Candidate?

You may be a good candidate for an eye lift procedure if you:

  • Are in good health

  • Are a nonsmoker
  • Have fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes (crow’s feet)
  • Are concerned with loose folds of skin
  • Have puffy pads of fat in the upper and lower eyelids
  • Experience droopy, excess skin obstructing your vision
  • Hold realistic expectations

  • Do not have high blood pressure, heart disease, or diabetes

Patients who choose blepharoplasty for functional reasons may be able to receive full or partial insurance coverage for the procedure.

What Happens During the Eyelid Surgery Procedure?

During your initial consultation, Dr. Shagets will perform a detailed examination and review your medical history to ensure that you are a good candidate for eyelid surgery. Once your candidacy has been confirmed, he will review the overall procedure, possible risks and address any questions or concerns you may have. This is a good time to decide if  you would like to add any additional procedures, such as a brow lift to your treatment plan to help you maximize your cosmetic goals. Once you are comfortable with the plan, Dr. Shagets will schedule your procedure.

Every year, over 100,000 patients in the U.S. choose to undergo eyelid surgery in order to improve their appearance, vision, or both.

Before beginning eye lift surgery, one of our nurse anesthetists will administer anesthesia for optimal comfort. For an upper eyelid surgery, Dr. Shagets will make an incision in the natural eyelid fold to minimize visible incisions. For a lower eyelid surgery, he will make inconspicuous incisions inside the eyelid or below the lash line. He will then remove fatty tissue, reposition or remove muscle, and trim excess skin obstructing vision or causing droopiness. Dr. Shagets can also provide laser skin resurfacing to tighten the skin below the eyelid. He will then carefully close the incisions with fine sutures.

This patient looked tired, so Dr. Shagets performed a brow lift and blepharoplasty to rejuvenate and awaken her appearance.

Recovery and Results

The overall blepharoplasty procedure generally takes about one to two hours, depending on the type of eyelid surgery performed. In order to achieve a smooth recovery and optimal results, you will be given detailed postoperative instructions to follow. Be sure to follow the instructions to prevent any problems from occurring.

Immediately after surgery, you may experience some redness, irritation, swelling, and bruising for the first week or two. Dr. Shagets will closely monitor your recovery during this time. Each patient responds to surgery differently, but side effects will fade with time and generally subside within two to three weeks.

Risks and Benefits

Any surgery, especially around the delicate eye area, involves some level of risk. These can include excessive tearing, eyelid malposition, and prolonged swelling. However, when choosing an experienced doctor with over 30 years of experience, such as Dr. Shagets, your chances for complications are drastically reduced.

Once the swelling has resolved and you have fully recovered, you will enjoy improved wrinkles, smoother skin, a more youthful appearance, and greater self-confidence.

My results are fantastic. Dr. Shagets is a profectionist, which I love. He is very gentle and thorough. He even came in on a Saturday to check out a concern I had... it was only a stitch! I would highly recommend Dr. Shagets.
